Model Home #1: The Molly Brown House, Denver

Posted by: thehomesnob on: October 21, 2008

The Home Snob paid a visit to Denver last week, where we viewed the home of Mrs. Margaret Tobin Brown, better known by the nickname that posterity gave her: The Unsinkable Molly Brown.  Mrs. Brown rose from modest beginnings to become a wealthy public figure, and her house is the epitome of Victorian taste.

Did we say good taste?  Well, it depends on your point of view.  Much of Victorian decor was aimed at displaying the homeowner’s wealth and social status.  And the Home Snob does not condone such nonsense, friends.  It’s common striving, and we want you to rise above it.

That having been said, we like visiting Victorian historic houses.  They’re usually cozy.  And there’s always a notion or two that’s worth stealing from the Victorian age and dragging back into the modern era.  Moreover, you can see old-time materials like anaglypta* and lincrusta* in a setting where their installation was the “latest thing.”

While the Home Snob does not recommend Mrs. Brown’s anaglypta-lincrusta color scheme of maroon and metallic gold (!), we do recommend a visit to her home, the Molly Brown House Museum.  As if the lure of its turkish corner* weren’t enough, the museum has a lively program of events to get you in the Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas mood.
